More Light Streaks In New York

New York

After I finished shooting on Mulberry Street, I walked to another favorite New York location, Madison Square Park. There’s a tiny island in the street where you can stand in front of a planter and get a great view of the Flat Iron Building with cars streaking by. By the time I got there, it Read more... you know you want to.

Night Time In Little Italy – New York City

New York City at night

While I was in New York last week for the Northeast Astro Imaging Conference and the Northeast Astronomy Forum & Telescope Show, I was able to spend a couple of nights in the city photographing. I didn’t have a lot of time, so I visited some of my favorite haunts for shooting rather than spend Read more... you know you want to.

Lucky Sunrise

Blue Ridge Parkway sunrise

If you’ve seen me give a night-photography program, you know I’m a big proponent of being prepared. Indeed, with night photography, that’s the name of the game. You don’t just walk around at night with a camera looking for photos. You go out with the shot already in your head and you create it. With sunrise Read more... you know you want to.

Nightly Night Image – Winter Waterfall

Winter waterfall

Okay, I promise this will be the last snow or ice night photo I’ll show you until next winter. Spring has sprung and it’s time for warmer thoughts from now on. Personally, I’m already getting excited about shooting fireflies in a month or so.

Tonight’s Night Photos – The Edge Of Twilight

Twilight on a river in eastern North Carolina

Sometimes when the conditions are just right, the demarcation in the twilight sky is as vivid as the colors of twilight itself. I’m afraid I don’t know what those conditions are, however, although it seems to occur most often after a front has come through and cleared the air. If there are any atmospheric scientists Read more... you know you want to.

Tonight’s Night Photos – Storm Clouds In The Roan Mountain Highlands

Storm clouds at Roan Mountain

For tonight’s night photos, I’ll give you a couple more old film shots from the Roan Mountain Highlands. I spent the night on a ridgeline and just after sunset, I watched a distant thunderstorm and the last bit of sunlight fire up the clouds. Back then (we’re talking the early 1990s), I didn’t know anything about Read more... you know you want to.

Early Morning In The Roan Mountain Highlands

Flame azalea on Roan Mountain

Here’s a couple more shots I made from the same location as yesterday’s photo. These are old film shots as well. In fact, I think I shot the horizontal image on the same morning as yeatserday's shot. Roan Mountain is famous for its Catawba rhododendron bloom in June, but it also has some nice displays Read more... you know you want to.

Nightly Night Image – Roan Mountain Highlands

Sunrise at Roan Mountain

Yes, this is a night photo. (See my definition of night photography.) I’ve been digging through some old film shots recently and dusted this one off to show you. I used a graduated neutral density filter (either 2 or 3 stops) to block light from the sky and hold detail in the foreground.

Mystery Light Streaks

Abstract light streaks

I knew when I committed to posting a new night photo every night that some nights would be tough. Tonight is one of those nights. I’m tired, and I think I’ll go crawl in the bed. But before I go, I’ll give you something to think about. Can you guess the subject of this night Read more... you know you want to.

As They Say, Somebody Has To Do It!

Grove Park Inn Spa

One of the things I like most about writing and photographing books is that it forces enables me to learn new things and to photograph things that I normally wouldn’t. I remember the first time I saw a photo of the Grove Park Inn Spa in Asheville, I thought it was a pretty cool place. Read more... you know you want to.
