Night Photography Tips–Rain Gear For Your Camera Pack

You’re probably not going to do much night photography in the rain, at least not where you set your pack out in it for extended periods. However, you still need to have adequate protection from dew, which can be just as harmful as rain. Anytime you set your pack on the ground for more than a few minutes, there is a possibility of dew forming on it. At a minimum, you should keep the cover of your pack closed when you’re not using it.

The best preventive measure you can take is to cover the pack with a waterproof pack cover. Some packs have covers built in to them, but I find it much more convenient to use a separate cover made for backpacks. Mine is much larger than it needs to be to cover the pack, but the extra size makes it easier to slip on and it gives me extra room around the sides for stashing other items if needed. I consider it standard gear for anytime I leave the pack on the ground at night for more than a few minutes.

Night Photography Tips is a nightly feature in which I give a quick tip for night photographers. It’s a way to share all the little things I do and think about in my night shooting, without boring you with my usual wordiness. If you have a tip you’d like to share, please email it to me and I might include it here, along with a link to your blog or website.
