Nightly Image – Clouds & Moonlight

The full moon occurs this Saturday evening at 11:39pm, which means the night sky is already getting light, with the moonlight washing out the fainter stars. This is the time to shoot landscapes illuminated by the moon, and if you include the sky, you’ll get a blue, daytime-looking sky filled with stars. Pretty cool!

Clouds at night in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands

Moonlit clouds over Charlotte Amalie in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Nikon D700, 17-35 f/2.8 lens, f/8, 61 seconds, ISO 400.

I shot the accompanying photo in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, in the middle of the night during a gibbous moon. Light pollution from Charlotte Amalie contributes the warm tone to the clouds.

This blog post talks in more detail about photographing under the light of the moon.
