Nightly Night Photo – Lunar Halo

Lunar halo around the full moon

Lunar halo. Nikon D800, Nikon 14-24 lens, f/5.6, 10 seconds, ISO 800.

My wife is a lunatic. And I’m sure glad that she is. Otherwise, she might not have stepped outside last month during the full moon to gaze at the sky. I was preparing for bed when she ran back inside to tell me there was a bright ring around the moon.

Waiting for me outside was the brightest lunar halo I’d ever seen. I ran back in, grabbed my gear, and ran back outside, oblivious to the fact that I was not fully dressed and the temperature was in the 20s.

I shot several compositions, but this one with our big Norway spruce in the foreground is Patricia’s favorite because it reminds her of a Christmas tree. The bright “star” to the upper right of the halo is Jupiter.

Oh, if you’re wondering why I wasn’t out there under the full moon in the first place, well, it’s because sometimes I’m just lazy and stupid. Sometimes it takes a lunatic to get me motivated!

Did you like this post? Well, I sure would appreciate it if you told your friends. Thanks!
