Twilight To The Rescue

Had an assignment to photograph one of the old mill towns along the Haw River in North Carolina. It’s typical of these kinds of towns, in that it isn’t the most exciting place to photograph. Contributing to the problem is that this particular mill has been reborn as condos, shops, and parking lots. All the photo charm from the picturesque-decay days is long gone.

So, how to make a flattering photo of a plain brick building? The first plan of attack was my old standby, which was to photograph it at night, or more specifically, early twilight. That certainly helped, but I have to admit that without the reflections in the river, this old mill still wouldn’t be much to look at.
