General Information & Updates for Hub 18 Hickory Nut Gorge
09/26/08 By now everyone knows that the the state of North Carolina owns the World's Edge Tract and also Chimney Rock Park. The original plan was to name the property Hickory Nut Gorge State Park, but the state changed it to the more appropriate Chimney Rock State Park.
I have explored most of the waterways within the new park and have seen three major and several minor waterfalls. However, I think it's best that I don't give any directions to them at this point. As with all new state parks, there will be a long process of surveying and master planning before full public access is provided. I'll wait and see what kind of access they set up before giving any directions.
01/08/06 Great news was reported in August 2005. Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy and The Nature Conservancy jointly purchased a 1,500+ acre tract of land called "World's Edge." The property, which was destined to become yet another housing development, contains rugged mountains with views and the headwaters of two good-sized streams, both of which contain waterfalls. The protected land is now scheduled to be turned over to the state of North Carolina to become the cornerstone of the new Hickory Nut Gorge State Park.
