Great Falls of Crabtree

Brad Bardin writes that he grew up in the area of Lassiter Mill. He says the mill was shut down when he moved there in the late 1960s. He says the lumber yard was still operating and the old mill was still there then. This contradicts what I had read earlier. Brad says a flood in the early 1970s finally did away with the mill. He assumes that the waterfall was renamed when the Lassiter family built the mill. Thanks for the info, Brad.

Great Falls of Crabtree

Don Ledford of Raleigh writes that the waterfall on Crabtree Creek is known as Lassiter Falls. He says the waterfall is man-made, falling over a concrete wall about 7-10 feet high. Since most mills were built at the site of a natural discordance in river profile, I'm guessing that this dam was built at a natural rapid that was once known as Great Falls of Crabtree. Once the mill and dam were constructed, the spillover might have become known as Lassiter Falls, perhaps in reference to the mill owner. Anyone out there know the true history?

Great Falls of Crabtree

While doing historical research I came across a reference to Lassiters Mill on Crabtree Creek near Raleigh. According to the reference a small falls at the mill was once known as Great Falls of Crabtree. The site was a popular swimming area. The grist mill burned in 1958. I have not investigated further.
