Lower Cascades
Schweinitz Cascade

While doing historical research I discovered an old photograph of Lower Cascades that has it captioned as “Schweinitz fall” (sic). A modern notation with the photo says the waterfall was known as “Schweinitz Cascade” in honor of German naturalist Lewis David von Schweinitz, who is said to have discovered the falls.

Lower Cascades

Soon after the revised book came out I learned that Hanging Rock State Park had started reworking that awful "trail" to Lower Cascades. And in early December Scott Ward emailed me that the work had been completed. Scott says they have installed a set of 180 steps at the steep portion, making it very easy to make it to the base of the falls. Well, as easy as climbing steps, that is.
