The waterfalls of western North Carolina rank among the most splendid photo subjects in the nation. No one knows the waterfalls of North Carolina as I do, so we won’t miss any opportunities on this trip. Everything from large, powerful, crashing torrents to delicate little drops over mossy boulders will be in our viewfinders. Couple the waterfalls with spectacular autumn foliage or spring ephemeral wildflowers and you get an unbeatable combination, creating the opportunity for an unforgettable photographic adventure.
Surrounded by Nantahala National Forest at an elevation over 4,000 feet, the little village of Highlands provides an ideal base from which to explore the many nearby waterfalls. Our home for the tour is Mitchell’s Lodge & Cottages in Highlands, providing deluxe accommodations in a rustic style. The lodge features a duck pond, outdoor pavilion, and private cabin where we gather in the evenings for slide shows and critiques. A soothing dip in the lodge’s hot tub spa makes the perfect ending to a long day of field photography.
If you like to photograph waterfalls and streams with either fall color or wildflowers, there may be no finer photographic opportunity in the country than what you will experience on this adventure. Please come along. I’ll make sure you have the photographic time of your life!
Duration: Tour officially begins at 4:00 pm on Wednesday and ends at noon on Sunday.
Meals included: All meals beginning with dinner on Wednesday and ending with breakfast on Sunday. Snacks, soft drinks, and water available throughout the day. Wine, coffee, and dessert available in the evenings at our cabin.
Lodging: Fee based on double occupancy. Single supplement, if available, is additional. Please inquire about price and availability.
Non-Photographer Spouses: Because of the transportation and dining arrangements, it is not possible to have any non-paying participants on this tour. Your non-photographer spouse is welcome, but must pay the full registration fee.
Programs & critiques: We will spend most of our time in the field taking pictures. However, there are opportunities for some classroom instruction. On Wednesday evening, I give a presentation on photographing waterfalls. We will use the evenings of Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for photo critiques and other instruction. If the weather prevents us from photographing in the field, we will use the time for classroom presentations and critiques.
Difficulty level: Most of the outings occur reasonably close to the vehicle and no overly strenuous activities are planned. However, we will be making one moderately long and difficult hike and at every waterfall there is potential for rock hopping and short bank scrambling to reach good vantage points. Also, understand that we’ll be going strong from morning to night.
Trip Planning Information: The information you will receive upon registration includes everything you need to plan your trip.
