“Along a beautifully isolated six-mile stretch of the most seductive corner of the Italian Riviera lies the Cinque Terre, five small towns gently and steadily carving a good life out of difficult terrain.”

That’s how Rick Steves opens his chapter about the Cinque Terre in his Italy guidebook. Steves’ book is written for the general tourist, not serious photographers. If it were, he would have opened the chapter with, “Get your butt to Cinque Terre as fast as you can and spend as much time there as you are able!”

I’ve traveled a fair amount, including the Italian regions of Venice, Rome, Tuscany, Florence, and Lake Como, but no place I’ve visited on Earth has captivated me quite like the Cinque Terre. (Okay, Venice is up there. I mean, what can you say about a town with streets made of water?)

The five villages of Cinque Terre—Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore—offer incredible photo opportunities. Charming seems woefully inadequate to describe them. No public cars are allowed in the five villages, adding immeasurably to the appeal. Access between the villages is by train, ferry, or hiking trail.

If there is a drawback, it’s that the Cinque Terre is too captivating and the popularity has led to it becoming horribly crowded during the tourist season. That’s why I’m offering this photo tour outside the tourist season. We’ll get to experience everything the Cinque Terre is famous for, but without the suffocating crowds. And for extra icing on the cake, the phot tour will run during the full moon. Imagine the villages of Cinque Terre bathed in moonlight!

In addition to the five villages of the Cinque Terre, we may visit other photographic towns along the Italian Riviera including Portovenere and Portofino.

A special emphasis of this photo tour will be photographing in the “blue hour” and at night. That’s when the villages really come alive in photographs.

Physical requirements

We will not be doing anything overly strenuous during this photo tour. However, you should be aware that the villages are situated on hillsides and have very steep streets. You will be climbing a lot of stairs throughout the day. Also, some sections of the hiking trails we may be using are moderate in difficulty.

Six nights lodging beginning March 18 is included. This is for double occupancy. If you desire a single room, please inquire about the single-occupancy rate. Depending on how your transportation to Cinque Terre works out, you may have to spend the night in Florence or Milan on your way to and from Cinque Terre. This is not included in the registration. If you arrive early or stay late, you will need to pay for those nights. We will be happy to make those arrangements for you at our host hotel.

Getting to Cinque Terre

Unless you are already in Italy, you will likely be flying into either Florence or Milan and then taking the train to Cinque Terre. I will provide detailed information to all participants for making the proper connections.

Special considerations

This will be an incomparable event for some participants and I want to do everything I can to make it as rewarding as it can be. This is going to be all about making the best photos possible while having a wonderful experience in a foreign country. As such, we may be pushing ourselves a little harder than the typical tourist would. Dinners will be delightful, but we might have to dine a little early or late. (We will not be eating during twilight!) Lunch one day might have to be a panini that we eat on the train. And we will be staying out late at night photographing the villages in the moonlight.

You should expect to alter your normal sleep and rest routine for a week. Don’t worry, we’re not going to run ourselves into the ground. At any time, a participant can hop a train and head back to the room for a nap. But you should come prepared for doing some serious photography while having the time of your life.

Registration and payment info

A nonrefundable deposit of $500 is required to secure your space. The balance is due 120 days from the start of the photo tour, including any extra room nights or single-occupancy charges. You can pay the deposit with credit card or PayPal using our online registration system. Final payment must be made using personal check or bank transfer. We need a minimum of 4 people for this trip. In the unlikely event that we do not get 4 registrants 120 days before the start of the trip, we may have to cancel. In that event, we will refund your deposit. We highly recommend that you purchase trip insurance.

Cancellation Policy

The $500 deposit is nonrefundable unless we cancel the trip. If you cancel up to 90 days prior to the event, we will refund all money paid, less the $500 deposit. Cancellations made between 90 days and 30 days prior to the event will be refunded 50%. No refunds will be given for cancellations made within 30 days of the event. However, if we are able to fill your space, we will provide a full refund, minus the $500 deposit, regardless of when you cancel. In the unlikely event we have to cancel the photo tour for any reason, we will refund 100% of all money paid.
