I am so excited to offer this photo tour to Venice, the most romantic and remarkable city on Earth. I’ve had a fascination with Venice since childhood. The more I learn about and photograph the city, the more fascinating it becomes. And it’s wonderful that I get to share my favorite city with you alongside the incredibly talented Donna Eaton. What a treat!

Good photographs of Venice are not in short supply. This legendary city of islands and canals is perhaps the most photographed in the world. In Venice, finding a good photo subject is a matter of opening your eyes. Of course, we will visit all of the renowned hotspots, but we designed this tour to be different. We want to introduce you to new sights, imaginative ideas, and unique vantage points. We want to help you create distinctive images.

It’s all about the light!

Great subjects photographed in poor lighting make for ordinary photos. But shoot an ordinary subject in great lighting, and you will make a terrific image. We are not going to miss any great lighting on this tour. We will photograph in the golden light of sunrise and sunset and in the magic twilight of dusk and dawn. We will also explore the city at night, photographing lights reflecting in the canals and making long-exposure cityscapes.

Venice does have negative side, and it’s a huge one. It is just too popular. During the height of tourist season, the crowds are suffocating, especially during the day when the cruise ships are docked. That’s why we planned this photo tour for March. While it’s always crowded to some extent in Venice, March provides a refreshing respite from the droves of summer. And when we walk the streets in the evening, we could have them all to ourselves. It is also cooler in March, which is a huge benefit for a photo tour in which you’re walking everywhere.

Please join Donna and me for a photographic and cultural experience you'll never forget.

General itinerary

The photo tour officially begins late afternoon March 8. After orientation, we will have dinner together as a group and then photograph in the twilight period into the night. The next day will be the first of 6 full days of the photo tour. I never establish a precise itinerary ahead of time for photo tours because I want to choose locations and subjects based on the weather and other conditions. We determine our strategy as we go along, making sure to photograph in the best light and weather. Special emphasis will be given to photographing in the twilight period of dusk and dawn, as well as night photography and light painting. In addition to the main city of Venice, we will spend plenty of time on the island of Burano, possibly taking the early boat and getting there for sunrise. Two of the six days will be free days with group options, during which participants can do whatever they like on their own, or they can get together with other participants. Donna and I will always be available to provide guidance. The photo tour officially ends on the evening of March 14.

What you must bring

A detailed packing list will be provided to all participants.

Physical requirements

Venice is a walking city. No cars are allowed. Although it is relatively small and totally flat, you will get a workout. There are lots of steps to climb to get over the canals and everything is paved in stone. If you are not used to being on your feet all day, Venice can wear you out. The good news is that it won’t be too hot during this photo tour and if you ever become too tired to continue, it will be a relatively short walk or boat trip back to the hotel. Everyone has the option to skip any of the group outings.

7 nights lodging is included beginning March 8. This is for double occupancy. If you desire a single room, please inquire about the single-occupancy rate. If you arrive early or stay late, you will need to pay for those nights. We will be happy to make those arrangements for you at our host hotel.

Getting to Venice

Airfare and boat transport into the city is not included. You will fly into the Venice airport (VCE). Flights departing from the U.S. generally leave the mainland in the evening and arrive in Venice the following day. We will be providing detailed information about how to get from the airport into the city using the boat  transports.

Registration and payment info

A nonrefundable deposit of $500 is required to secure your space. The balance is due 120 days from the start of the photo tour, including any extra room nights or single-occupancy charges. You can pay the deposit with credit card or PayPal using our online registration system. Final payment must be made using personal check or bank transfer. We need a minimum of 6 people for this trip. In the unlikely event that we do not get 6 registrants 120 days before the start of the trip, we may have to cancel. In that event, we will refund your deposit. We highly recommend that you purchase trip insurance.

Cancellation Policy

The $500 deposit is nonrefundable unless we cancel the trip. If you cancel up to 90 days prior to the event, we will refund all money paid, less the $500 deposit. Cancellations made between 90 days and 30 days prior to the event will be refunded 50%. No refunds will be given for cancellations made within 30 days of the event. However, if we are able to fill your space, we will provide a full refund, minus the $500 deposit, regardless of when you cancel. In the unlikely event we have to cancel the photo tour for any reason, we will refund 100% of all money paid.
