It’s back!

After taking a couple years off, I’m once again offering this wildly popular waterfall and wildflower photography tour. The waterfalls of western North Carolina rank among the most splendid photo subjects in the nation and no one knows them better than I do. Everything from large, powerful, crashing torrents to delicate little drops over mossy boulders will be in our viewfinders. Couple the waterfalls with plenty of opportunities to shoot the spring wildflowers that the southern Appalachians are so famous for and you have an unbeatable combination.

Surrounded by Nantahala National Forest at an elevation over 4,000 feet, the little village of Highlands provides an ideal base from which to explore the many nearby waterfalls and wildflower patches. This is sure to be an unforgettable photographic adventure!

A highlight of this photo tour will be photographing waterfalls under the light of the full moon.

The photo tour begins at 4:00pm on Thursday, April 26, and ends around 11:00am on Sunday, April 29.

What you must bring:

A detailed packing list will be provided when you register. You should bring a tripod and polarizing filter. Lenses from wide-angle to telephoto can be used for the waterfalls. Closeup gear will be necessary for the wildflowers.

Physical requirements:

Most of the waterfalls we will shoot are easily accessible and near the road, but you may need to scramble around on rocks or roots to get into the best positions. One location we may shoot requires a 1.5-mile moderate hike, with a 100-yard relatively steep section. Also, understand that we’ll be going strong from morning to night. If you’re in good physical condition, you’ll have no trouble, but if you’ve been on the couch for the past 6 months and aren’t used to bending your knees for a long weekend, you’re going to get a workout.

Lodging is not included and you are free to stay wherever you like. However, it is recommended that you stay at our host hotel, where we will have our meetings. The host lodging for this workshop is Mitchell’s Lodge and Cottages at 264 Dillard Road, in Highlands, North Carolina. (828-526-2267) Mitchell’s is offering a 10% discount for all tour participants.
